In January 1979, U.S. President Carter and Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping signed an Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology as one of the first acts of normalization between the two countries. The signed agreement formalized a cooperative relationship in science and technology initiated years earlier following President Nixon’s trip to China, that has since widened and deepened for the benefit of both countries. Today, China and the United States represent two critical nodes in the global S&T enterprise. Furthermore, S&T cooperation is central to addressing many bilateral and global challenges. The panel will discuss the role of, mechanisms for, and challenges to cooperation in science and technology between the two countries over the coming decades.
